Auren longs for the freedom that comes with adulthood and wants to celebrate her coming of age with her friends on a distant island. When her strict foster-father, Kado, says no, she sneaks out, determined to prove she can take care of herself. But her forbidden excursion turns into a nightmare when the island is overrun by the Galvadi Empire forces. Worse, she learns that she is their main target.

Drevin, Emperor of the Galvadi people, is convinced she will enslave the people of the Serpent Isles and wants her dead.

When Auren learns she is a shadow stalker, someone who can travel between the physical and spirit worlds, and that she is the only one who can stop Drevin, it’s more than she can take. Her whole world is turning upside down and instead of adulthood bringing freedom, she is instead overwhelmed by a greater undertaking than any one person could possibly overcome. It seems hopeless.

However, if she can defeat Drevin, maybe she can have her old life back. More than that, the people she cares about would be safe to live their lives, and the people of the Serpent Isles would be free of the Galvadi forever.

"Hurry, Deakan!"

"Damn, you’re impatient. Here," he said as he handed them to me and turned his gaze toward the valley.

I adjusted the settings and looked through the binoculars to find hydrocars with the insignia of the Galvadi Empire surrounding the village. Men poured out of the vehicles, but it became too chaotic to make out the details of what was happening. I couldn't tell if they were killing people, but they began burning the houses. Then I noticed that one of the hydrocars broke off from the others and was heading right towards us.

"Put out the fire!" I yelled.

Teaser #2: From Shadow Stalker Part 1 Episode 2 Chapter 1

"Who's there?"

No one answered.

It was just my imagination, I told myself until something cold and wet brushed my neck. The thing sniffed at me, sending shivers through my body that had nothing to do with the cool damp air. I gasped and stiffened. My first instinct was to move away from whatever it was as fast as possible, but my training took over. I slowed my breathing, holding myself as still as I was able. But my heart pounded uncontrollably, and I would have sworn the sound echoed off the walls of the cavern.

It sniffed at me again, this time nudging my face with its nose, as it let out a low guttural growl. Its fetid breath gave me the impression it had eaten recently. At least it wouldn't be hungry anytime soon. Besides, if it meant to harm me, I'm sure it would have done so by now. But what did it want? Better yet, how did it get down here? I attempted to inch myself away from it, but it growled again and nudged me hard with its head. When I froze again, it gripped my arm in its jaws and started dragging me across the floor.

I ripped my hands out of Kado's and opened my eyes, but the image was still there.

"Stop, please," I begged.

The vision cleared and Kado took me by the shoulders. "I'm sorry, Auren. I hated doing that to you."

"I can't…I…That," My sobs garbled my words, so I gave up trying to speak. Instead, I wrapped my arms around Kado, gripping his shirt in tight fists, and buried my head in his chest.

To my surprise, Kado held me as I wept. I was a monster. Drevin was right about me.

Teaser #4: From Shadow Stalker Part 1 Episode 4 Chapter 2

"You two. The way you couldn't take your eyes off each other. It's like you've never seen a boy before. I thought you grew up in a city. They do have boys on Appolia, don't they?"

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, but this was different. It was like—like electricity every time he looked at me. Like we were part of each other."

She stopped. Her smile had disappeared, and she looked worried.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing," she said, but the wariness hadn't faded. "It's probably nothing."

Teaser #5: From Shadow Stalker Part 1 Episode 5 Chapter 2

No, I couldn't be dead. I wasn't in the shadow world, so I struggled to grasp onto something real. Something caressed my forehead, so I latched on to that feeling and followed it back to consciousness. Kado had me cradled in his arms, brushing wet strands of my hair out of my face.

What did you do to me? I asked through our bond, unsure of whether I'd be able to speak. My body felt too weak and numb to move, though I could tell I was no longer being restrained.

"You won't be able to break the connection again. Only I have that power now."

Teaser #6: From Shadow Stalker Part 1 Episode 6 Chapter 1

"You've heard the Galvadi have taken the Serpent Isles?" Dosien asked.

"Yes," Kado said. "Cathnor contacted me and gave me the news."

My uncle sighed. "That may have gotten him into this mess. The Council of Elders has declared martial law over the Dark Isle. They claim since the Galvadi Empire is in control, they have jurisdiction here as well."

I strained harder to hear what they were saying.

"No government of the Serpent Isles has ever ruled the Dark Isle," Kado said, his voice bristling with condescension.

"They claim since we no longer have a Foramar, and Drevin is a former shadow stalker, the welfare of our people now lies with him."
